Most people think they are alone when it comes to this condition, and are embarrassed to discuss it with anybody, even their primary care doctor. The good news is that many patients can be helped with a comprehensive approach. Initial treatment, after a thorough examination, might include dietary changes, exercise & medication. That may not work for everybody. Fortunately, newer treatments are available at Colon & Rectal Surgical Associates.
If you or someone you know suffers from this problem, two new treatment options are now available:
Solesta – an injectable bulking agent has been approved for treatment of fecal incontinence. Approximately half of patients can expect an improvement in their symptoms if they are considered good candidates for this procedure.
Interstim – This technique uses a nerve stimulator to improve sphincter tone and affect sensation. Although just recently approved for fecal incontinence, this has been used extensively in patients with bladder control problems, with very good results.
