Minimally Invasive surgery

When it comes times for surgery, whether for polyps, cancer, diverticulitis, colitis or other problems of the colon or rectum, you may be a candidate for minimally invasive surgery. This might include laparoscopic surgery, transanal endoscopic microsurgery (TEM), or advanced colonoscopic polypectomy.

Many colon operations can now be done laparoscopically. This technique uses small instruments inserted into the abdomen through ½ inch incisions. The advantages include less post-operative pain, shorter hospital stay & quicker recovery. Some operations still must be done using an open technique if there is a history of previous abdominal surgery, obesity, severe colonic disease or other factors (some which can be predicted beforehand and others which are not discovered until we are in the operating room).

TEM is a surgical procedure that uses specialized instruments to remove large polyps & some tumors that are in the rectum (the last 6-8 inches of the colon). This can avoid the need to have part of the rectum removed, can be performed as an outpatient or overnight stay procedure, and leaves no visible scars.  We have partnered with Virtua, the only hospital in South Jersey that has invested in this equipment, to provide this option for our patients.
